Subject: The White Lion Hotel Banbury
I am hoping somebody can help as I am researching my family history. I believe my forebears owned and operated The White Lion Hotel in Banbury until the mid 1960's when I believe it was demolished. I would like to know where in Banbury it was located.
My father, now deceased, grew up in the pub and told me of a tunnel that ran from the pub to a local monastery. He said that he found a pair of monks shoes in the tunnel when he was a young lad. I would be grateful for any information.
Yours

Subject: Cattle and Horse Dealers
Hello -
My quest is for information on cattle and horse dealers in the Banbury area from the late nineteenth century up to the 1940's. This is because I have a grandfather a Mr Makepeace who I believe was part of this trade. This is all I know and would like to know more, especially any photographs. It is said that he was originally from Ireland but I cannot establish this at all.
I would be grateful for any leads to further information.

Subject: The fir tree inn
Hi there,
I am looking for any information about the fir Tree Inn that stood at 31 North bar (Street). I know my grandparents were lodging there in 1917.
Any info would be good. I know it has gone now as it would have been destroyed to make way for the new flats.
Thanks Mary Clifton

Subject:Banbury Photos/Images 1960's - 1970's Woodgreen Ave area
Hi -
I lived in Woodgreen Avenue Banbury from a baby after the houses were first built, and remember the large mud hills where the now field is, along side of Standbridge Hill.
Does anyone have any images of Woodgreen Avenue, or surrounding areas from when the houses where being built (1960) until about the late 1970's?
Thanks

Subject:Banbury Sea Cadets
Hello - I was commanding officer of TS Harvester up to 1992 when due to work committments I had to leave. The Unit has sadly in recent times struggled to stay alive and in January I was approached to return by the management committee as it was under notice of closure due to take effect from March 31st.
At the point of my return the unit had just 4 regular cadets and no staff.
Today April 29th we have 12 cadets but still no staff other than me and I admit I am struggling and need help.
During my time as an officer and the C.O. we had over 40 cadets most of whom would now be in their early to mid thirties; some I know have married and moved away but I would like to hear from any old cadets say from 1980 - 1992 who feel they would like to get involved again perhaps withtheir children as well.
In particular I am looking for Richard Stretton, Matthew Stretton, Alan Donaldson, Simon Timms, Stephen Wing, Liam Farrell, Pattie Harewood, Phillipa Moore, Claire Beesley, Karen McConnell and many others as they were a good crew and I know they had good times as cadets - so come on "guys" lets be having you back and come and help.
Also anyone who feels they would like to get involved contact me -you dont have to be an ex cadet or ex navy as we can give you all the trianing you need - you just need to have a healthy appetite for serious fun!
Waiting to hear from you all!

I am an old pupil of St Leonards Primary School on the Middleton Rd Grimsbury Banbury.
I was wondering if anyone remembers some of the songs that Mr Spicer our headteacher and music teacher wrote and taught us. One went " Children of good saint Leonards since school life began, proud of the old school motto, Manners Maketh Man.
Can anyone add to the songs or know where all his great work went?

Dear Sir / Madam, I am currently researching locations used in the Inspector Morse / series, for a book I am writing In effect, this is to be a ‘collection of stories’ based on locations, from people who where there at the time. This includes the crew, extras, bystanders, property owners, etc. I understand that the Banbury area was used as a location and if this is the case, I wondered if you or anyone you knew would be willing to share any such memories on the subject.
I really would be very grateful for any help or advice you may be able to give me.
Many thanks, Paul Allen

| Hi Raine - I want to thank you and the Banbury
Cross Company for posting my Request on your "Can You Help"
website. I received an immediate Response from Peter Rooke -
Corporate Core - ICT Services. He sent me the exact Photo I
was looking for. I am still in shock at getting this photo.
Thank You very much. Regards Clinton |
| The bakers in Parson Street closed in 1967
and the developers were instructed to preserve the cake shop
but they thrust scafolding poles through the building and the
then council refused to take any action the building could have
been saved it was located in Parson Street just before the passage
that leads to the High street it was one of those scandels that
over the 40 years has all but dissapeared the Banbury Advertiser
owned by the Russell family that exposed some of the wrong doings
in the town. The Banbury Advertiser has sadly gone but it's memory lives on as does Banbury cakes no matter what they are called I can still remember the taste. Regards Chris Beesley-Reynolds |
