Meeting No. 187

LAST MEETING - 1st November 2007

John DeanOver 55 members attended this month's meeting and heard from Geoff Bell, Flood Risk Manager of the Environment Agencies Thames Region.

Geoff gave an excellent presentation and a very clear insight into the roles and responsibilities of the Environment Agency with respect to flooding.

He explained how dealing with flooding has changed from simply building flood defences to flood risk management, including development control, flood warning and improving flood resilience of our homes, businesses and general infra-structure.

The morning raised over £60 for the Water Aid charity, so many thanks for your generosity.

NEXT MEETING - Thursday 6th December

John DeanJack Kagan - Holocaust Survivor.

The Banbury Business Breakfast Club will end the year with a very special guest speaker.

Holocaust survivor, Jack Kagan, will give a moving talk about the horrors of being a Jew living in German-occupied Poland during World War II. Jack Kagan was just 12 when the German SS marched into Novogrodek in Belorussia in July 1941 and changed his life forever.

Jack, now 76, escaped from a ghetto work camp through a tunnel prisoners had dug, amid a hail of bullets, in September 1943. He joined a group of Jewish freedom fighters helping the Russians repel the Germans and two years after the war ended in May 1945, he moved to London, raised a family and became a successful businessman.

“I eventually settled down to a normal life but I can never forget the past,” he said.

We're sure this will be a popular event and may have to limit numbers.
